Knit Suede Fabric?
I was fortunate enough to get three huge boxes of fabric for free from a local freecycle, and of these three boxes, at least one box worth is various colors of ‘knit suede’. I had no idea what it was even, but then a trip to the local Rag Shop opened my eyes. It is 100% polyester, soft, and fuzzy. The problem now? Trying to figure out what you use this type of fabric for.
Any ideas?

Edited to include a pic of this magical fabric. There is no stretch to it, and it is fairly non-flowy like real suede.

I’m from over at Wardrobe Refashion…
Maybe softies? I’ve never heard of knit suede, but I’m racking my brains. If it’s really soft, it might be fun to try making little patchwork lap robes out of. You know the kind that our grandmas used to have, made out of doubleknit scraps? Just use squares and then tie the layers together with bright yarn….it would probably be tough and nails and something the kids could cuddle.
slinky 70s style wrap dress?
I have a 3 year old who LOVES to wear dresses, even when its freezing cold outside. Which brings me to think maybe that fabric would be good for “fancy” type winter clothes…..maybe?
BTW
I came over from WF as well.
Gloves? Vogue has two different Vintage Vogue glove patterns.
Hi Lisa, I’m from WR too. I’ve never heard of “knit suede” before either. Is it the similar to “ultra suede”? If it is, people use to make just about anything out of it…suits, skirts, jackets, etc. The only thing I’ve ever used it for is the backing of some freeform beading beading pieces.
It’s nice to know there is another geek amongst us that would rather have fabric and yarn than clothes.
I have a few (several) (ok mnay) years on you and I too am a geek….the math/science kind, but I’m sure we’ll get along! Please, please tell me you have, or at least seen, Debbie New’s book “Unexpected Knitting” (she’s my hero) Granted much of her book seems mathmatical, but that’s just way she comes about it ideas (she’s a geek too) There is LOTS of things in it that a mindless knitter would love.
oops the cat sent the first one! Sorry!
The knit suede can be used for anything, just about. Jackets, pants, skirts, bags, hats, etc. Be sure you pre-wash, as sometimes the colors run. Use a ballpoint needle, so you avoid skipped stitches. It’s easy to sew, just use lots of pins.
Another geek (engineering) here from WR. We need a pic of the fabric. How thick is it? A slinky dress sounds good, but maybe it’s firmer than that? Show us some fabric pr0n
Thanks for all the replies! I am editing the post to include pics. I see that fabric.com offers this stuff as ‘faux suede’. And Mary, gr8 l33t!
A slightly structured jacket would be a good idea. Maybe something cropped with a little round collar? Or something Asian in feel, with a Mandarin collor. Lots of room for embellishment, maybe add some cut-outs with a contrasting color behind?
I just got a pattern that might work very well with this fabric. Slightly oriental looking, basically unstructured - lots or ways to embellish it.
I have fancy ribbon threads handing from my walls just to fondle! Can’t even think about sewing with them!
Got the patterns from http://www.wwwearables.com - it’s called Keshy. Way cool looking.
Sorry! Missed your question Tracy! No, I haven’t seen or read the book yet! I will have to put it on ‘The List’! And thanks Mary and Jeanette, I like these ideas! I just listed this rose colored fabric at ebay - I have a whole bolt, and can’t use it all. I’ll be adding other colors soon too. So much fabric!!!
Verbal agreements are in place for both fighters, though bout agreements have yet to be distributed.
